Series 1201 – Selective Release Tool
The Thru Tubing Systems Selective Release Tool is designed for use with wireline deployed explosive or propellant tools. It is installed as an integral component in the tool string between the CCL and the firing sub attached to the top of the tool body. The purpose of the tool is to guarantee separation of the expended or used downhole tool from the basic wireline BHA (cablehead, sinker bars, CCL) used to deploy the downhole tool.
An operator may need to jettison a downhole tool for a variety of reasons, although it is primarily due to a change in tool OD or shape that would make retrieval to the surface risky. This would be the case with perforating guns, jet cutters, etc. The Selective Release Tool gives the operator the option of release at any time after the downhole tool is functioned by selectively discharging a second detonator. It utilizes pressure from the detonator and/or subsequent BHP flooding into the tool upon detonation.
Special features incorporated into the design of the Selective Release Tool eliminate possible problems that have been encountered when utilizing other commercially available release tools. Some available tools require the lower half of the tool string to become stuck and the top side to be pulled using the wireline unit to cause the components to separate. One unique feature of the Selective Release Tool is the positive separation of the wireline BHA from the expended tool. This is accomplished by an internal shifting piston applying opposing force between the two halves and causing separation without assistance from the wireline unit. The Selective Release Tool works even when deployed in a horizontal section of a well.
Another feature of the Selective Release Tool’s design is the distribution of weight and applied forces on the tool components. The weight of the downhole tool string is distributed to a series of steel balls or keys in an internal profile. This eliminates the possibility of an accidental release during primary tool actuation, by forces exerted on the severing tension bolt used to suspend the downhole tool on other commercially available tool releases.
The Selective Release Tool is capable of carrying a total tool load of up to 10,000# and will operate at BHP of 15,000 psi. The BHT is only limited by the explosives and seals selected. The upper portion of the Selective Release Tool returned to the surface is easily re-dressed for re-use.
